Open House Thefts - Be On Alert!

Realtors, it's important to stay on guard during open houses. Failing to do so can result in your clients' valuables being stolen during your showings. Here are some tips to help you stay on guard:

  • Conduct open houses during daylight hours only
  • Review the condition of the property and ensure all utilities are working
  • Advise your clients to remove valuables or place in safes or other secure locations before the open house
  • Staff open houses with additional agents if you're expecting a large number of visitors

Also, don't remain in one spot of the home, such as the kitchen, during an open house. Continue to walk the property and check in with visitors periodically. If you have a gut feeling that a visitor is suspicious, don't confront them. Instead, engage with them about the property to try to redirect their energy. If they don't soon show disinterest and leave, immediately call the police if you feel you are in danger.
